Art Deco design is a jazzy celebration of the Machine Age, mass production, geometry, and the straight line. In Palm Beach County, sleek themes are seen representing tropical, nautical, masculine, and stylized motifs that reflect speed and technology. Elements include eyebrows, flat roofs, porthole windows, rounded corners, columns, glass blocks, bandings, multiples of three, and Zig-Zag steps. Palm Beach County has dozens of Art Deco treasures built throughout the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s spread out in the downtowns of Delray Beach up through West Palm Beach. The buildings are significant to the history of South Florida because as some of the earliest structures in the area. They are in danger of being demolished due to the ever-increasing amount of development.

Sharon Koskoff has lived for art since her teens. She majored in fine arts at Brooklyn College and earned a master’s in color theory at New York School of Interior Design and a degree in printmaking at the School of Visual Arts. A noted expert on both murals and Art Deco, Koskoff has written books on both. She earned a silver medal from the Florida Authors & Publishers Association for Murals of the Palm Beaches (Arcadia, 2018) and has helped bring art to schools and public building across Palm Beach County. Determined to save Art Deco structures from the wrecking ball, Sharon Koskoff educates her audiences about their significance.
