As Preservation Month comes to a close, we are pro

As Preservation Month comes to a close, we are proud to spotlight one of the newest additions to the Historical Society’s collection: a psychedelic shortboard in the iconic Lightning Bolt style, featuring a distinctive winged pintail and signed “Bobby” beneath the resin. 🌊

Surfed at Lake Worth Beach throughout the 1970s and 1980s by Barbara Pedersen (1961–2001), this board carries the marks, memories, and stories of a life lived in and around the waves.

Preservation is not only about the distant past. It is also about documenting the cultures, communities, and everyday experiences that shaped Palm Beach County. Objects like this help us build a fuller and more representative historical record for future generations.

As part of its new chapter within our collection, the surfboard will receive a permanent accession number and be carefully preserved within our archives. We are deeply grateful to the donors who entrust us with these pieces of local history.

You will also be able to see the board on display in our upcoming exhibition, Surfing Florida: A Photographic History, opening June 24 at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who served our country and gave their lives in military service. Through photographs preserved in our collections, we remember generations of service members whose sacrifices, stories, and legacies remain woven into the history of Palm Beach County.

Please note: the museum will be closed today in observance of Memorial Day.

1️⃣ A military parade on Clematis Street in West Palm Beach featured the local unit of the Florida Defense Force, commanded by Captain R.D. Hill, leading the procession. At the rear marched a small contingent from Coastal Patrol 3 of the Civil Air Patrol, ca. 1942–1945.

2️⃣ Crowds line Clematis Street as service members march through the heart of West Palm Beach, ca. 1942–1945.

3️⃣ On September 15, 1918, The Palm Beach Post published the names of Palm Beach County men who had registered for military service during World War I.
