As students across Palm Beach County prepare to re As students across Palm Beach County prepare to return to the classroom, we join our community in thanking the teachers, past and present, who have inspired curiosity, encouraged learning, and shaped generations of students. Through the Historical Society of Palm Beach County's collections, we're also looking back at the generations who came before them.

A science teacher guides students through using a microscope in the 1980s. Members of Palm Beach High School's Future Teachers Club, photographed around 1950, remind us that many students were preparing for careers in education long before graduation. A 1963 Roosevelt High School yearbook captures a moment at prom, where the students broke out into the “Hully-Gully” dance. A 1938 Palm Beach High jacket covered with classmates' signatures captures the tradition of celebrating friendships and marking the end of a school year.

By preserving these photographs, yearbooks, and mementos, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County ensures that the stories of our community's classrooms—and the people who filled them—remain part of our shared history.

Do you still have your yearbook, letter jacket, class ring, or another keepsake from your school days? We'd love to hear the story behind it in the comments.

Calling all pineapple lovers! Did you know that Palm Beach County has a rich history in pineapple farming? Before sugarcane became the county’s most profitable crop, communities like Delray Beach and Lake Worth were home to numerous pineapple farms. The fruit became a major agricultural product in the 1890s, thriving in the sandy soil near the coast.

The Windella Pineapple Plantation was located just north of West Palm Beach’s Historic 1916 Courthouse, where the Historical Society of Palm Beach County operates today. There was also the Yamato Colony in Boca Raton, where a community of Japanese farmers was established to expand the area’s pineapple industry. One of these farmers, George Morikami, remained in Florida long after the colony disbanded.

Pineapple farming remained an important industry until the late 1920s, when freezing temperatures, plant diseases, the profitability of other crops, and less expensive imports from the Caribbean contributed to its decline.

These photographs offer a glimpse into Palm Beach County’s changing agricultural landscape. Without them, it would be difficult to imagine the industries that shaped the county during its earliest years.
