Agricultural Tour 11/17/2022

Farm Tours presented by Florida Sugar Cane League

Agriculture has long been the lifeblood of Palm Beach County, beginning with our early European settlements. In what would become the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA), settlers and land speculators found unique conditions for growing food. The muck soil, heat, and flat land made the EAA a perfect conduit for feeding South Florida—and later, the nation. Palm Beach County leads the nation in the production of sugar cane, sweet corn, sweet bell peppers, lettuce, radishes, Chinese vegetables, specialty leaf, and celery.

The Florida Sugar Cane League was founded in 1964 by George Wedgworth and a group of South Florida farmers. It represents all the nearly 300 farmers in the EAA through its educational efforts. Its mission is to build sustainable long-term relationships between agriculture and Palm Beach County’s diverse population by exposing those on the East Coast to the lives and livelihoods of the people who grow much of their food. The League offers “Meet A Farmer” luncheons and Farm-To-Table dinners to strengthen that bond. It also represents the industry’s interests in Washington, DC.

The HSPBC has partnered with the League to reserve two dates for their group Farm Tour. It is a fun, informative trip into the heart of the area where our farmers grow food for you and your family. Guests learn how farmers grow sugar cane and the many other crops that make the Everglades Agricultural Area the Winter Vegetable Capital of the World. The sheer vastness of the land, the economic impact of agriculture, and the importance of Lake Okeechobee are all on the agenda as the League seeks to provide a first-hand glance at life in the Glades.

  1. I registered for this event awhile ago, for 2 people, order #13876. I don’t believe that I received an email confirming this, nor the details on where in Belle Glade we go. Would you please check on this and send me the details, thanks.

    1. Hi,it sounds like you received a receipt of your reservation. We will distribute the details a week or so before the event. The bus will leave from the Historic Courthouse at 8am and return about 4pm, as shown. I hope this helps.

  2. Thanks for reply, Lise. Couple questions, please – where is the Historic Courthouse? Also my guest is an elderly woman and we both need to plan out the day with restroom stops. Will restrooms be available throughout the day? Also is the tour mostly sitting on the bus, or is there walking involved? Thanks in advance.

    1. The courthouse is the photo on our homepage, 300 N Dixie Hwy, corner of Dixie & 3rd St, West Palm Beach. We are not conducting the tour but I will try to find answers for you before too long so you can decide if this is for you. Thank you. I am quite sure the bus is only to take you to Belle Glade, then you will walk.

    2. Hi Chris, I have some information now, and more will be emailed to you as a registrant, hopefully next week. The bus ride is about an hour. You will be on the bus most of the time except for a stop at sugar cane fields, which you can handle as you see fit. There will be a stop for lunch at a restaurant too. We didn’t forget you, and stay tuned!
